Invisible cities summary of each city8/10/2023 ![]() ![]() If possible, a one page graphic card would also be available for the players to reference (although this would need to be worked out in relation to how much about the city they have discovered). I envision the Cities each being visible to the GM as a compact two-page spread for easy viewing during play. The fulfillment or thwarting of a Grand Purpose constitutes a campaign arc.Įach City presents a unique set of Warps (things about it that are twisted from normal, weird rules that will get in the players' way when they are unfamiliar) and Challenges to the player's core missions (resistance to discovery, tax collection, or peacebreaking revolution). The Revolution is aware of the Khan's Purpose and is working against it at each opportunity. Without telling the players directly, the Khan will encourage and reward bonuses for actions and information that align with their Grand Purpose. It can be a Good or an Evil purpose, and it can be Small to a World-Altering (which dictates the number of Missions required to fulfill it). ![]() They have a Grand Purpose that each Mission is helping to fulfill. The Khan is created (with some structure) by the GM. The system will also allow them to equip themselves to handle the standard "fantasy suite" of problems: puzzles, obstacles, violent encounters, negotiations, heists, and so forth. The player characters all possess some measure of magical ability, which is why they are emissaries of the Great Khan. The Khan rewards the player group with experience and resources, with bonuses for good storytelling. At the end of each Mission, they must each relay the story of their visit and a description of the City to the Khan. Their core mission is always the same: survey the City to which they are sent, collect the Imperial Tax, and keep the Imperial Peace. They are the Khan's emissaries - tax collectors, royal enforcers, and imperial surveyors. The game begins with the player group living in the Imperial City in service to the Khan, who rules an Empire that covers the known world. Here are some ideas I've had on gameplay roles, flow, and format which I am posting for insight and critique. I've been thinking about a tabletop RPG where the players take on the role of Marcos Polo. It's a series of short vignettes on different cities as described by Marco Polo to the ruler of the Empire, the great Kublai Khan. Invisible Cities is a book by Italo Calvino. ![]()
